AI Search Engines and the Future of SEO
Google owns 90% of the global search market. But with the arrival of AI search engines, such as Perplexity and SearchGPT, Google is facing real competition that could challenge its search engine dominance.
In this video, I break down everything you need to know about AI Search Engines, including how they work, who the key players are, and most importantly, what it means for your SEO strategy moving forward.
Open AI’s Search Engine is Now Live in ChatGPT
OpenAI has launched real-time web search within ChatGPT(aka SearchGPT) for paid subscribers, with plans to expand access to free, enterprise, and education users in the coming weeks.
SearchGPT, integrated directly into ChatGPT’s interface, allows users to trigger searches manually or let the AI decide when to pull live web data.
SearchGPT aims to compete with AI-driven search from Google, Perplexity and others, by offering "up-to-date," interactive information without ads. Additionally, OpenAI has partnered with media outlets for content access, emphasizing responsible use and avoiding paywalled content.
Up-to-date might be a stretch, since early feedback regarding SearchGPT has found that its lacking in the timeliness department. I can confirm this through my own experience, but more on that later.

Google Launches Interactive AI-Powered Experience Learn About
Google has launched Learn About, an AI-powered educational tool that transforms learning into an interactive experience. Think of it as a busier middle-ground between Perplexity and Wikipedia.
Users can explore topics through conversational AI, upload materials, or engage with curated content that combines traditional resources with dynamic interactions.
Positioned as a personal tutor, the tool adapts explanations based on user input.
Though experimental, Learn About aims to make complex concepts accessible and engaging, with the potential to shape digital education if it evolves effectively through user feedback. Having experimented with Learn About for a few days, I think it might be Google's most direct and useful "AI search engine-y"effort to date and I'm genuinely excited to see how it evolves!

The Generative AI Elephant in the Room of Google Search
Google is catching it from all angles these days.
The ongoing DOJ case against Google over its search monopoly now also focuses on the company's dominance in generative AI.
Google's vast data from search, coupled with exclusive deals and infrastructure, gives it a powerful edge in AI development.
The case also reveals how Google’s strength in search has enabled it to dominate the emerging AI landscape, creating structural barriers for competitors.
Keep watching this story, as the outcome can hold significant implications for both AI and search.

Perplexity's Flawless Dive Into Real-Time Election Tracking
Perplexity's Election Information Hub effectively tracked live U.S. election results, distinguishing itself by avoiding major errors, a critical milestone for AI search technology.
But don't give Perplexity its flowers too fast. It achieved this feat by dialing back its AI and relying heavily on human support, partnering with verified sources and moderators like The Associated Press.
Meanwhile, it took several days post-election before SearchGPT could tell me who won. Maybe humans won't be replaced by AI as soon as some suggest!

Meta is Working on Its Own AI-Powered Search Engine
Meta is reportedly developing its own AI-powered search engine to lessen its reliance on Google and Microsoft's Bing.
The new search engine will provide conversational AI-generated summaries, helping users stay updated on current events and news.
Meta plans to integrate this tool into its existing ecosystem, including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, offering users a more interactive search experience through its AI chatbot.
This underscores the point I made in my video above: the future of search marketing will be multichannel. Marketers should expect to build SEO into every aspect of their digital marketing efforts, from social media to podcasting.

OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic Are Struggling to Build More Advanced AI
AI companies like OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic are encountering challenges in advancing their technologies.
OpenAI's new model, Orion, has underperformed, especially in coding tasks. Google’s latest Gemini and Anthropic’s Claude 3.5 have also not met expectations.
The hurdles include a shortage of quality training data, high costs, and limitations with scaling current approaches.

Inside Forward's Failed Attempt to Revolutionize the Doctor's Office
Healthcare startup Forward, founded in 2017 with ambitions to revolutionize primary care through tech-driven clinics and AI-powered "doctor-in-a-box" CarePods, is shutting down.
Forward's CarePods faced significant operational and technical challenges, including frequent equipment failures and low patient interest. Despite plans to scale nationwide, Forward managed to open only a few locations before financial and logistical issues forced a pivot and, ultimately, closure.
In this article, Former employees open up about all the behind-the-scenes struggles that led to Forward pulling the plug (pun intended). I shuddered when I read the line: "automated blood draws routinely failed." I think I'll keep my doctors and nurses human.

Ozempic, Wegovy Linked to Lower Hospitalizations in Alcohol Addicts
A new study by researchers in Finland and Sweden suggests that GLP-1 medications like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Victoza may reduce hospitalizations and drinking in people with alcohol use disorder.
Analyzing 17 years of data on over 220,000 individuals with alcohol use disorder, obesity, or Type 2 diabetes, the study found that those taking semaglutide or liraglutide were hospitalized less frequently for alcohol-related issues than those on traditional addiction treatments.
Though promising, clinical trials are necessary to confirm if GLP-1 drugs are directly responsible for these positive outcomes. If proven effective, GLP-1s could become a powerful addition to the limited treatment options for alcohol use disorder.

The Sickest Patients Are Fleeing Private Medicare Plans and Costing Taxpayers Billions
An analysis from The Wall Street Journal reveals that seriously ill patients frequently leave Medicare Advantage (MA) plans to switch to traditional Medicare. The switch most commonly takes place during the final year of life, due to coverage denials and limited access to needed care.
This shift imposes significant costs on taxpayers, as traditional Medicare bears the high expenses for hospital and nursing home care that MA insurers avoid.
The analysis highlights that from 2016 to 2022, MA plans saved around $10 billion in medical costs from these patient dropouts, suggesting that cost-saving tactics in MA plans can leave vulnerable patients struggling to access adequate care.

OpenAI Nears Launch of AI Agent Tool to Automate Tasks for Users
OpenAI is preparing to launch AI "agents" that can automate complex tasks for users, according to CEO Sam Altman.
These agents will have a degree of autonomy, handling activities like scheduling, searching for information, and managing various digital workflows.
Expected to integrate into OpenAI’s ChatGPT product, this development is part of a broader effort to enhance productivity tools.
Altman emphasized the importance of safety and user control in deploying these capabilities, given the risks associated with autonomous AI systems.
I did a helpful video breaking down AI agents in marketing - you can view it here.
